We are pleased to announce the SIB course entitled:
"Introduction to statistics for biologists 2013".
This five-day course, which will be held in Lausanne during the week of
Sept 9-13 2013, is designed to provide graduate students in the
biomedical sciences with experience in the application of basic
statistical analysis techniques to a variety of biological problems.
Attendees will work through short tutorials (practical exercises) on the
topics discussed in the class (theory). During the practicals students
will learn how to work with the widely used "R" language and environment
for statistical computing and graphics.
We plan to cover the following topics:
- introduction to hypothesis testing (t-tests, ANOVA)
- introduction to linear models
- principal component analysis
- introduction to clustering analysis
- correlation and regression
- introduction to non parametric tests
- numerical and graphical summaries
Participants should bring their own computers with the R statistical
software installed and prior attending the course get familiar with the
command line environment and the R statistical analysis package.
The course is organized by the Bioinformatics Core Facility (BCF) of the
SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, and the speakers are from the BCF
and from the nearby EPFL.
Further information and the registration are available from
The number of seats is limited.
Hope to see you there!
