Dear EMBnet users,

We would like to inform you about a new bioinformatics journal specially
for biologists called:

Briefings in Bioinformatics is a new, international, quarterly
journal that will help the biologist make sense of the abundance of
biological data available to them. It will provide practical guidance on how
to exploit these exciting new resources, focusing on the needs of
bioinformatics software and database users and offering easy-to-follow
methodologies for specified tasks.

The aim of the journal is not to present original research but to
provide guides to users of existing databases. This is what makes the
journal both unique and invaluable.

Published by Henry Stewart Publications, publishers of the
much-respected Journal of Commercial Biotechnology, and edited by Martin
Bishop, Head of Bioinformatics at MRC Human Genome Mapping Project Research
Centre, Cambridge, UK, Briefings in Bioinformatics is guided by an
international editorial board of experts from pharmaceuticals, biotech
companies, universities and research institutes all over the world. You can
find a list of the editorial board, and a list of the peer-reviewed,
hands-on articles scheduled for the inaugural volume, on the journal's

Briefings in Bioinformatics is supported by an educational grant
from EMBnet, whose members are entitled to a 10% discount on a subscription
to the journal.

"Briefings in Bioinformatics will guide biologists through
the maze of on-line databases, analysis tools and other resources using a
tone that is consistently friendly and helpful, and never condescending."
Lincoln Stein, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, USA

"The imminent completion of the human genome sequence and
move to high-throughput biological techniques are driving demands for people
to make intelligent and effective use of these data. Briefings in
Bioinformatics is unique in providing a forum from which the non-specialist
can obtain the practical help needed for query, analysis and
			Charlie Hodgman, Bioinformatics Group Leader,
GlaxoWellcome, UK

"The 21st Century will become the bioinformatics era:
biologists will all have to become information scientists as well as life
scientists. Briefings in Bioinformatics will help researchers and educators
in the life sciences stay on top of the information technologies they need
so that they can focus on what they enjoy - biology."
Tim Littlejohn, Head, the Australian National
Genomic Information Service; CSO, eBioinformatics Inc, Adjunct Associate
Professor, University of Sydney, Australia

"Bioinformatics is an evolving discipline, requiring
definition and explanation to those new to the field while keeping the
active practitioners and visionaries aware of new technologies and
opportunities. Briefings in Bioinformatics will provide the right forum for
introducing a broad range of bioinformatics while maintaining the
perspective of how it is practiced in the real world."
Michael Liebman, Global Head of Computational
Genetics, F. Hoffman-La Roche, USA

Briefings in Bioinformatics will provide an indispensable resource
for users of biological databases and analytical software. It will demystify
the technologies, review the latest developments in bioinformatics and keep
you fully up-to-date with this exciting new field. For more information,
